Last August 14, Mars the pup finally had his third grooming session. This time it was different since instead of getting a "Summer Cut" he had what they called the "Kalbo Cut". It was not because we want him to go bald but because it was the only choice we had regarding his case. His hair in his ears, chest, and other areas are tangled already and there was no other option but to go bald. We stayed inside the grooming center to support Mars and to check how the whole bald cut will look on him. It took about two hours for the session to be over. During the session, the groomer discovered something that we might not be able to discover if we hadn't let Mars go for the "Kalbo Cut"...
When parts of his "hair" got shaved, rashes became visible on his chest area. Manong the Groomer then told us that it is possible that Mars is allergic to whatever it was that we were feeding him. He then asked us to disclose the brand of dog food that we were using. It was Pedigree. The one that was for puppies... He asked us if it contains chicken & egg cause that's what puppies are usually allergic to. I felt bad for Mars since I was not able to notice any of his rashes or his behavior of scratching himself incessantly. When we got home I immediately checked the label on his dog food and there I found out that it was indeed made up of chicken & eggs. We went to Animal House and bought a different dog food. Still Pedigree, but this time it's made up of lamb & rice.
Anyway, we bought him a new leech & a new collar after he got groomed (hoping it was enough to compensate for our lack of observation on his situation). He looks a little weird. Now that he's bald, he looks more like a pug rather than a shih tzu. He looks so tiny, so petite. I'm still trying to get used to his new look but of course as his owner I firmly believe that he's still the cutest pup ever.
